It’s hard to watch a film on a sensitive subject like Alzheimer’s, but my curiosity to watch Julie Christie in a role that many critics have applauded and the fact that Sarah Polley wrote and directed it made me check it out.

The opening seemed cold. I thought that it was too obvious in saying that Christie’s Fiona was suffering from the disease’s early stages. However, the film progressed into the slow mental breakdown Fiona experiences. Furthermore, it illustrated the isolation her husband felt being without her physically and what he felt when she was with him.

This film really challenged the audience as far as what is the degree of Fiona’s illness. Is it really possible for someone to lose 20+ years of her life, recreate a new life with a new starting point or just punish those around her?

I don’t think that this film gives a complete answer, but the riddles it gives make this deeper than just a character study.
