"Juno"

She has a witty tongue and morning sickness, and you just don’t know what will come out of her month next. Unfortunately, the vomit probably had more substance than the film itself.

I wanted to like “Juno.” I thought that it was about time that a girl not played by Natalie Portman could show up on the screen and be eccentric and alternative and the center of attention. I really wanted this to happen. After all, “Napoleon Dynamite,” “Rushmore” and “Garden State” are some of my favorite movies.

I didn’t find it here. I mean the hamburger phone? Are we trying too hard to be hip and edgy? Juno being considered goth and having this sense of music superiority?

It did have its moments. Paulie Bleeker is the saving grace of this film for me. He pretty much let life happen to him, fit the high school mold (homework copy sheet, track team geek, lovesick puppy), but he had this dry delivery that made him even more pathetic and comical.

However, I was very disappointed, but I hope that this film’s success will influence more filmmakers to make freak-girl-centered flicks like Mean Girls, Welcome to the Dollhouse and Saved and to make less movies like Bratz.
