"Eastern Promises"

How can a guy who is only the driver to the son to one of the big Russian mobsters in London look, talk and stare harder than the rest of the mob? Luckily, Viggo Mortensen steps up to the plate and kicks some butt.

I love mobster movies and Naomi Watts is one of my favorite actresses. That being dealt with, I didn’t like the movie or the plot.

David Cronenberg directed both this and “A History of Violence,” another Viggo film that I didn’t like. However, I will give Cronenberg credit for not making Viggo’s Nikolai a cartoon character as he did with Viggo’s Tom Stall in “Violence.” And hooray for bath wrestling!

Instead, he left that honor to Vincent Cassel’s Kirill. Then again, I also never liked Cassel. I can never get past his role in “Elizabeth” to save my life. Watts was in full Watts mode at least.
